Prosperous United vs Straffan AFC - KDUL U15’s Saturday 14th September
Match Reporter - Noel Murray
The homeside came into this game in flying form after winning their opening 2 games of the season. Beating Kilcullen on the opening day of the season 4 vs 1 they then traveled to Newbridge and won on a scoreline of 5 vs 2 last weekend. Boosted by a host of new signings and the return of their former midfield maestro Mathew Conneff the lads are hoping this season could be a special one.
The young men from Prosperous got off to the worst possible start however today when Straffan took the lead after a swift counter-attack led to the Straffan forward sliding the ball past the vastly improved Cillian Gordon in the Prosperous goal.
However that suddenly awoken the homeside who struck back moments later, the ball was bouncing between players at the edge of the Straffan box when Brian Dwane took matters into his own hands and surged forward from right back to smash home the equaliser.
Before Straffan could catch their breath a swift move from the Prosperous midfield 3 set Cayden Murray through on goal, he calmly slotted past the away keeper to put the home side a goal up.
Straffan tried their luck a few times but were finding it hard to break down a stubborn home defence which was led by their captain Michael Barr and the ever present Louis Powell.
The homeside kept creating chance after chance but it wasn't until 5 minutes before the break before Mathew Conneff got in on the act with a delicately struck shot from the edge of the area to make it 3 - 1.
It was almost 4 - 1 moments later when almost each of the Prosperous players got a touch in a sublime one-touch passing move that ended with the high-flying Tuan Lee crossing to Cayden Murray who agonisingly rolled the ball just wide.
The 2nd half was very much like the 1st, with the home team now playing against a strong wind.
It wasn't until the 50th minute until they grabbed another, Cayden Murray with a wonder strike from all of 25 yards on the volley leaving the away keeper with no chance as the ball flew into the top corner.
Lee Brown was disappointed not to be starting today haven been in the 1st 11 on the opening 2 games, came on with a point to prove, and prove it he did, Mathew Conneff picked him out with a diagonal crossfield pass, Brown controlled in the air and his next touch was devastating as he drove home from a tight angle to make it 5.
Murray then capped a fine performance when he popped up to claim his hat-trick and 5th goal of the season to score the homeside's 6th.
Straffan got a consolation goal with moments to go when a strike from the edge of the area carried by the wind caught out substitute goalkeeper Josh Holland to make it 6-2.
Aidan Carew was having a fine game in the middle of the park and he then got in on the act with a well deserved goal to round off the scoring to make it 7-2.
A great team performance all round with all the substitutions impressing also, Callum Casey and Alan Berg both having chances of their own after coming off the bench. Fionn Curran impressed in his 1st start of the season at left-back, while Adam Brown continues to control the game from the center of the park.
The lads will travel to Clane next Saturday in the hope of making it 4 from 4.
